Leesburg, VA – December 9, 2021 – AM LLC Senior Medical Advisor and former CDC Director Dr. Robert R. Redfield, Jr. joined Fox & Friends this morning to provide updates regarding the Omicron variant, the latest SARS-CoV-2 variant of concern.
Noting that this is the first variant capable of “outcompet[ing] Delta,” Redfield predicted that Omicron would likely become the dominant variant within the next 6-12 weeks. Variants of concern like Omicron, he noted, are generally driven by increased transmissibility, a greater ability to evade countermeasures, and less pathogenicity. A lack of symptoms, however, can still prove problematic, as symptoms are what prompt infected individuals to stay home.
Redfield also noted that the predominant symptoms of Omicron — aches, pains, and in children, rashes — seem to be different from the fever, pulmonary and constitutional symptoms which characterized earlier infections.
Regarding vaccines, Redfield stated that it was important to move away from the term “fully vaccinated.” While natural immunity is limited, he noted, vaccine-induced immunity is too.
“We should anticipate that you’re going to have to be vaccinated every six months or so,” he said. “Until we solve the problem of getting a more durable vaccine.”
